HE BELIEVED EVERYTHING IN LIFE WAS MADE OF CAN BE EXPLAINED BY FOUR, EARTHLY ELEMENTS: EARTH, AIR, WATER, AND FIRE.
AND HIS IDEAS NOW, WHILE HIS PHILOSOPHY IS TRUE IN A SENSE, EVENTUALLY THIS CONCEPT EVOLVED INTO THE PRESENT-DAY PERIODIC TABLE WE'RE ALL FAMILIAR WITH.

WHERE PROFESSOR ZHANG'S RESEARCH ON IMPROVING INDOOR AIR QUALITY TAKES PLACE.
WE'LL ALSO GET TO MEET ATHE GROUP OF STUDENTS DEVOTED TO STUDYING THIS MULTIINTERDISCIPLINARY WORK.
LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
PEOPLE SPEND OVER 80% OF THEIR TIME INDOORS, BUT THE RESEARCH IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO REDUCE THE EXPOSURE OF PEOPLE TO VARIOUS POLLUTANTS, HARMFUL UMA PLATA ANTS.
AS WE IMPROVE THEIR HEALTH, AND SO THIS IS A GROUP AND WE HAVE RESEARCHING IN DIFFERENT AREAS.
AS I MENTIONED, WORKING ON AIR CLEANING TECHNOLOGY AND WORKING ON AIR CLEANING BUT MORE FOCUS ON AQUATIC DEVELOPING A GREEN DESIGN STUDIO.
GREEN DESIGN SUED STUDIO FOR GREEN BUILDING RESEARCH AND DESIGN.
WORKING ON MONITORING AND ANGLE OF TECHNOLOGIES AND THEY'RE WORKING ON HUMAN PERFORMANCE INVESTIGATIONS.
YOU CAN SEE MANY POLLUTANTS, MANY TYPES OF POLLUTANTS, INCLUDING PARTICULATES, ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, NON-ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND THE MICROBIALS.
THE HUMAN EFFECT ON THE PEOPLE ACTUALLY DEPENDS ON THE DIFFERENT POLLUTANTS; FOR EXAMPLE, ULTRAFINE PARTICLES, PROBABLY AFFECT PEOPLE'S RESPIRATORY SYSTEM AND LIKE ASTHMA AND OTHER POLLUTANTS, THE OZONE, AFFECT THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEMS AND ALSO EVEN REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEMS.
SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
THIS IS A SET UP TO STUDY THE FACTOR FOR EMISSIONS FROM AND TO STUDY HOW PEOPLE REACT TO THE OZONE THAT CAN GENERATE NEW POLLUTANTS 678 WE MOCK UP A REALISTIC ENVIRONMENT WITH VENTED LAYINGS CONDITIONS AND ALSO WE USE THIS SETUP TO TEST DIFFERENT TYPE OF AIR CLEANING TECHNOLOGIES AND THAT IS ONGOING PROJECT I THINK HUMANS ARE A VERY GOOD TEST.
IF YOU GO TO THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT, IF YOU SMELL SOMETHING, IT'S NOT GOOD.
IN TERMS OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY, PEOPLE'S SENSATION, WE CALL PERCEIVED INDOOR AIR QUALITY.
YOU CAN TAKE SAMPLES TO SEE WHAT KIND OF POLLUTANTS ARE INDOOR AIR.
TRADITIONALLY WE HAVE TO USE THESE KINDS OF TUBES.
AND THE POLLUTANTS ARE COLLECTED IN THE SOLVENTS UNDERSTAND WE HAVE TO TAKE UPSTAIRS TO ANALYZE.
BUT THIS INSTRUMENT CAN DO IT ON THE FLY.
IT'S A GREAT INSTRUMENT, NOT ONLY FOR LABORATORY STUDIES BUT ALSO USING THE FIELD.
THERE ARE SEVERAL CHALLENGES.
ONE OF THEM THAT COMES TO MY MIND IS CLEARLY POLLUTANTS INDOORS BECAUSE SO MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF POLLUTANTS AND HOW DO WE DEAL WITH THEM, YOU KNOW, IN TERMS OF AIR CLEANING.
SO IT REQUIRES DIFFERENT TYPE OF AIR CLEANING TECHNOLOGY FOR DIFFERENT POLLUTANTS.
NOW THE SECOND CHALLENGE IS WHEN YOU CONTROL THE INDOOR AIR QUALITY, YOU ALSO WANT TO DO IT ENERGY EFFICIENTLY.
BUILDINGS CONSUME OVER 40% OF ENERGY THAT PEOPLE CONSUME.
AND TO DEAL WITH THESE CHALLENGES, THERE ARE MANY APPROACHES TRADITIONAL METHODOLOGY, YOU CONDITION THE WHOLE BUILDING.
BUT, IN FACT, WE DON'T NEED TO BECAUSE ONLY THE MICROENVIRONMENT A LOT OF PEOPLE AFFECTS PEOPLE'S HEALTH AND COMFORT.
SO THE NEW TECHNOLOGY WOULD BE TO ACTUALLY LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL WHERE PEOPLE ARE.
>> TECHNOLOGIES WE ARE COMING TO DEVELOP AND TESTING INCLUDING THE IONIZATION TECHNOLOGY WHICH CAN IONIZE THE AIR AND CHARGE WHICH CAN INCREASE THE EFFECT.
AND ALSO SOME DIFFERENT STRATEGIES LIKE THE PARTITIONS IN OFFICE SCENARIOS AND ALSO LIKE PERSONAL POLLUTION THAT CAN DELIVER CLEAN AIR DIRECTLY.
>> I THINK APPLICATION OF THE TECHNOLOGIES IS STILL EXPENSIVE.
THAT'S WHY IT'S NOT IN THE RESEARCH COMMUNITY.
PEOPLE KNOW THAT BUT IN THE PUBLIC, I THINK IT'S TAKING SOME TIME AND WHAT WE NEED IS ACTUALLY TO DO A DEMONSTRATION.
THE REAL FIELD DEMONSTRATION OF THIS TECHNOLOGY TO SHOW HOW GOOD, WHAT KIND OF PERFORMANCE THIS TECHNOLOGY CAN PROVIDE.
CAN PROVIDE IN TERMS OF IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR PEOPLE BUT AT THE SAME TIME SAVE ENERGY.
WE HAVE A LOT OF CONCERN ABOUT OUR HEALTH AND WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME INDOORS NO MATTER WHAT JOB YOU ARE DOING AND SO THAT IS ENCOURAGED ME TO CONTINUE ON THIS WORK AND TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT TO NOT ONLY MYSELF BUT TO EVERYONE.
>> INDOOR AIR QUALITY FIELD IS AN AREA THAT NEEDS MORE ATTENTION.
WE HAVE PROBABLY CAPTURED THE ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC AND BHOO NEEDS TO FOLLOW UP ARE RESOURCES AND TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO GET INTO THE FIELD AND IT'S AN EXCITING FIELD IN MY VIEW BECAUSE IT'S REALLY REQUIRES MULTIDISCIPLINARY WORK.
>> SO, PROFESSOR, HOW DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT YOUR WORK?
>> WELL, THE DEP CERTAINLY MAKES THIS WORK A LOT MORE IMPORTANT.
PEOPLE BECOME MORE AND MORE AWARE OF THIS INDOOR AIR QUALITY PROBLEM, SO THAT'S NUMBER ONE.
SECONDLY, THERE IS INCREASING DEMAND FOR THIS TYPE OF WORK.
SO THE FUNDING FROM INDUSTRIES AND FROM GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ARE ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED.
>> HOW, ACTUALLY, IS THE VIRUS CARRIED, THE COVID VIRUS CARRIED IN THE AIR?
HOW DOES THAT WORK?
>> WELL, SO IF YOU LOOK AT A THING ABOUT AN INFECTED PERSON, THE VIRUS EXISTS IN THE AIR THE PERSON BREATHES AND THEY'RE VERY SMALL PARTICLES THAT CARRY ON WITH SMALL PARTICLES AND THE PARTICLES CAN FLY THROUGH THE AIR.
IF WE ARE SITTING CLOSE TO EACH OTHER AND ONE PERSON IS INFECTED, THE VIRUS CAN TRANSMIT FROM PERSON TO PERSON THROUGH THE AIR.
>> SO SHANNON, YOUR WORK IS ABOUT PROVIDING SOLUTIONS FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THOSE ISSUES?
AND HOW DOES COLDON CORPORATIONS PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR THOSE THINGS?
>> YOU KNOW, OVER THE PAST TWO AND A HALF YEARS, AN EPIDEMIOLOGISTS LIKE MYSELF, MOST PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT EPIDEMIOLOGISTS WERE AND WHAT THEY DID ALL DAY LONG AND NOW IT'S A PRETTY COMMON WORD.
BUT AT THE COLDEN CORPORATION, WE WORK TO HELP PEOPLE DEAL WITH CHEMICAL, PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS.
I THINK THAT, YOU KNOW, THE BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS, SORT OF SOME CRIERS, RIGHT, ABOUT SAFETY PROFESSIONALS, INDUSTRIAL HYGIENISTS HAS REALLY COME TO THE FOREFRONT AND I'M HOPING THAT JUST THIS RENEWED, YOU KNOW, FUNDING SOURCES AND ATTENTION ON INDOOR QUALITY CAN BE SUSTAINED.
INDOOR QUALITY HAS SORT OF GONE THROUGH THE PHASES OVER THE YEARS WHERE WE THINK ABOUT ENERGY OR HUMAN PERFORMANCE AND NOW WE ARE THINKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, INFECTION INFECTIOUS DISEASE CONTROL.
THAT IS THE SILVER LINING OF THE PANDEMIC AND I'LL TAKE THAT.
>> THAT WOULD BE A TREMENDOUS SILVER LINING FOR A BOOST FOR EVERYBODY IN THIS AREA.
TELL US YOUR RESEARCH ABOUT NEW YORK STATE WATER AND LAKES.
>> SO WE STUDIED LAKES IN NEW YORK STATE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT SOME OF THE SO CALLED INVISIBLE CONTAMINANTS AND MOST OF THEM ARE ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS IN LOWER LEVELS IN THE LAKES SO THAT HAS BEEN OUR PRIMARY FOCUS OF OUR RESEARCH OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS.
>> AND DAVE, YOUR WORKING-- YOU ARE WORKING IN THE SAME AREA.
HOW DOES TENG'S WORK RELATE TO YOURS?
>> WE TEND TO BE MORE GENERALIST WHERE TENG IS FOCUSED IN ON THESE MICROPOLLUTANTS.
WE TAKE A BROADER LOOK AT WATER QUALITY.
AND IN GENERAL, IT'S A GREAT SUPPORT SINCE THE FEDERAL CLEAN WATER ACT WAS PASSED IN THE 170s,-- 1970s, WATER QUALITY IN OUR LAKES AND OUR RIVERS HAS REALLY IMPROVED MARKEDLY.
THERE ARE A FEW EXCEPTIONS.
ONE WOULD BE, AND YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THIS IN THE NEWS RECENTLY.
HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOMS SEEM TO BE ON THE RISE.
>> I DID SEE THAT.
>> THEY CAN POTENTIALLY PRODUCE TOXINS AND ALSO THESE ORGANIC MICROPOLLUTANTS WHICH TENG STUDIES ARE ALSO AN UNKNOWN THREAT AT THIS POINT.
>> SO, YEAH, WE DO READ ABOUT ALGAE BLOOMS AND THE TOXINS THAT COME FROM THOSE.
HOW ARE THOSE RELATED TO THE WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS WE HAVE READ ABOUT.
>> WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS ARE A SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS.
PHOSPHOROUS AND NITROGEN TO OUR WATER BODIES.
AND THESE NUTRIENTS ARE THE FOOD WHICH GROW ALGAE.
WHEN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH ALGAE, YOU CAN HAVE A HARMFUL ALGAE BLOOM WHICH CAN POTENTIALLY PRODUCE TOXINS AND BE A THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH OR MORE LIKELY TO OUR PETS, WHEN THEY MUCK AROUND IN THESE SCUMS ALONG THE SHORELINE, THEY WILL THEN LICK THEMSELVES CLEAN AND THEY CAN REALLY GET QUITE A DOSE OF TOXINS THAT WE TYPICALLY WOULDN'T BE EXPOSED TO.
WE DON'T DRINK THAT WATER.
>> I DON'T GENERALLY LICK MYSELF TO GET RID OF THE GREEN STUFF.
STAY AWAY FROM LICKING, OKAY.
TENG, WE WERE TALKING BEFORE ABOUT BROWNING.
WHAT IS BROWNING OF LAKES AND WATERS?
>> BROWNING REFERS TO THE CHANGE IN OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF LAKE WATER; WHICH USUALLY MEANS THAT THE LAKE WATER COLOR SHIFTS TO A DARKER COLOR.
AND THAT IS MOSTLY DUE TO THE INCREASING PRESENCE OF ORGANIC MATTER FRESH FROM OUR LAND AND BROWNING IS COINED TO DESCRIBE THE PHENOMENON.
>> LET'S COME OUT OF THE WATER AND TURN TO JENSEN.
WHAT TECHNOLOGIES AND STRATEGIES DO WE HAVE TO IMPROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY?
>> YEAH, PRIMARILY THREE STRATEGIES.
ONE IS SELF CONTROL, INDOOR AIR QUALITY SHOULD START WITH INSELF CONTROL.
>> KEEPING BAD THINGS OUT OF THE WATER, KEEPING BAD THINGS OUT OF THE AIR.
>> FROM THE AIR ESPECIALLY.
IF WE LOOK AT INDOOR AIR IN THE CASE OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY, YOU ARE TRYING TO REDUCE THE EMISSIONS FROM VARIOUS MATERIALS, FROM FURNITURES, FROM ALSO SOME COOKING AND ALL THE HUMAN ACTIVITIES.
THAT'S NUMBER ONE.
SELF CONTROL.
AND SECONDLY IS VENTED R VENTILATION.
MAKE SURE HAVE YOU ENOUGH VENTILATION FOR THE SPACE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE BREATHING ZONE.
AS YOU HAVE SEEN IN THE MEDIA, YOU KNOW, MICROENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL IN PRISONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT.
VENT WHRAITION.
AND THE THIRD-- LENT VENTILATION AND THE THIRD IS AIR CLEANING.
WHEN WE BRING MORE VENTILATION FROM OTHER AIR, THERE IS AN ENERGY PENALTY.
SO WE HAVE THE CONDITION OF ALL THE AIR WE BROUGHT FROM OUTSIDE WHEN IT'S HOT OR WHEN IT'S COLD, AND THAT CONSUMES A LOT OF ENERGY.
SO TO DEAL WITH CERTAIN POLLUTANTS THAT YOU KNOW, THEN WE CAN USE AIR CLEANING TECHNOLOGY TO DEAL WITH THAT.
SO IF WE COMBINE THE THREE TECHNOLOGIES, SELF CONTROL, VENTILATION AND AIR CLEANING TOGETHER, WE CAN OPTIMIZE THE METHODOLOGIES FOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT.
>> SO SHANNON, I'M IMAGINING THOSE THINGS ARE THE KINDS OF THINGS YOU ALSO DO AT COLDEN CORPORATION.
TELL US WHAT KINDS OF THINGS YOU DO THAT ARE SIMILAR?
>> YEAH, FOR SURE.
THOSE ARE THE THREE BASICS AND SO DEPENDING ON THE ENVIRONMENT WE ARE IN, WHETHER IT'S A SCHOOL OR HOSPITAL OR TELEVISION MOVIE SET OR AN AIRPLANE, WHEREVER THOSE SETTINGS ARE, MANUFACTURING IN PARTICULAR, WE LOOK THROUGH AT HIERARCHY TO CONTROL HAZARDS IN THE WORKPLACE.
AGAIN, CHEMICAL, PHYSICAL AND BIOLOGICAL.
THINKING ABOUT THEM IS A LITTLE DIFFICULT, YOU KNOW,.
THEY WILL TELL YOU, THERE ARE STANDARDS FOR WATER QUALITY.
PEOPLE DEMAND GOOD WATER QUALITY.
MOST PEOPLE TURN ON THE TAP AND DON'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT AND THEY ASSUME THERE IS GOING TO BE CLEAN WATER COMING OUT OF THE TAP.
WHEN YOU WALK INTO A BUILDING, ANY KIND OF BUILDING OR MANUFACTURING SETTING, WHATEVER, THERE ARE NO INDOOR AIR QUALITY STANDARDS.
AND SO WE REALLY WORK TO HELP PEOPLE INTERPRET CONSENSUS GUIDELINES AND RECOMMENDED GOOD PRACTICES AROUND INDOOR AIR QUALITY TO MAKE SURE WE ARE CONTROLLING THOSE POLLUTANTS.
>> SOY WE KNOW THAT THE CLEAN WATER ACT WAS OR CAME INTO BEING IN THE 70s, AS I REMEMBER.
I THINK YOU MENTIONED, ARE THERE SIMILAR TECHNOLOGIES FOR CLEANING WATER AT THIS POINT?
WHAT IS IN USE?
>> WELL, WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANTS, THAT TECHNOLOGY TO TREAT THE WASTE FROM OUR HOMES AND INDUSTRIES HAS ADVANCED MARKEDLY OVER THE DECADES.
A GREAT LOCAL EXAMPLE OF THAT IS ONONDAGA LAKE WHERE HISTORICALLY IN ORDER TO GET THE LAKE TO RECOVER TO THE EXTENT THAT IT HAS, YOU WOULD HAVE HAD TO DIVERT WASTE WATER AROUND THE LAKE AND INTO THE SENECA RIVER.
NOW THAT TREATMENT PLANT IS A STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY THAT ALLOWS THE DISCHARGE TO GO ON TO OPTIONED LAKE BUT LEAVE US WITH VERY GOOD WATER QUALITY.
>> NOW I WONDER.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN SWIMMING OR BOATING OR FISHING IN ONONDAGA LAKE.
