Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship>> THE PURPOSE OF THE PLANT PHENOTYPING FACILITY HERE AT THE BYES THOMPSONENCE STUT IS TO IMAGE THE PLANTS.
WITHIN THE PHENOTYPING FACILITY, WAS WE ARE DOING IS WE ARE IMAGING THE PLANTS EVERY 12 HOURS OR EVEN MORE OFTEN.
AND THAT ALLOWS US TO LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT HOW PLANTS REACT TO DIFFERENT CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT AND WHAT THEIR GENETIC COMPONENTS THEY'RE CONTRIBUTING TO THAT.
IT SAVES A LOT OF EFFORT AND TIME BECAUSE IF YOU WANT TO MEASURE PLANTS EVERY 12 HOURS, WE WOULD HAVE TO HAVE SOMEONE IN HERE DOING ALL OF THE MESS YOU UNDERSTAND ITS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
WHEN THE ROBOTS ARE DOING THAT, WE DON'T HAVE TO.
WE CAN DO THAT WITH CAMERAS THAT ARE OPERATING WITHIN THE HYPERSPECTRUM, THAT THEY'RE ALLOWING US TO VISUALIZE THE EFFICIENCY BUT THE CAMERAS ARE ALLOWING US TO REALLY QUANTIFY HOW WELL THE PLANT IS DOING AND WHAT IS DOING BEST WHICH IS PHOTO SIN PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
AND THEN IT MOVES ON TO THE NEXT CAMERA AND THAT'S WHERE WE ARE GETTING THE VISUAL OF THE PLANTS.
AND THEN THE LAST BUT NOT LEAST STATION IS THE AUTOMATED WEIGHING AND WATERING STATION.
WE CAN GET ALL OF THIS DATA AFTERWARDS TO SEE WHICH PLANTS ARE DOING BETTER, WHICH PLANTS ARE DOING WORSE AND HOW MUCH EXACTLY BETTER ARE THEY DOING.
SO B.T.I.
HAS INVESTED APPROXIMATELY $1.5 MILLION TO DEVELOP THIS FACILITY AND THAT INCLUDES PREPARING THE SPACE.
SO OUR INTERNAL COSTS FOR USING THE FACILITY RIGHT NOW, YOU WOULD NEED TO RECOVER APPROXIMATELY $3,000 PER WEEK OF USING OF THE FACILITY BY ACADEMICS THAT ARE ON THE CORNELL CAMPUS.
FOR ALL OF THE COLLABORATORS, ACADEMIC COLLABORATORS THAT WOULD LIKE TO BE USING IT FROM OUTSIDE OF THE CORNELL CAMPUS, WE WOULD HAVE TO RECOVER $4.5,000 AND THEN FOR THE COMMERCIAL PARTNERS, WE CHARGE FIVE TIMES AS MUCH AS OUR EXTERNAL RATES.
THE FACILITY HERE AT THE B.I.I.
IS CONTRIBUTING TO SOLVING THOSE CHALLENGES ABOUT THE GLOBAL FOOD SECURITY AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH ALLOWING US TO APPLY THOSE VARIOUS CONDITIONS TO THE PLANTS DIRECTLY.
THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING IN THE FIELD, THEY'RE VERY COMPLEX.
SO YOU'VE GOT INCREASED TEMPERATURE, DECREASED VIABILITY OF WATER, INCREASED Co2, ALL THE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING SIMULTANEOUSLY.
THE PHENOTYPING FACILITY, WE CAN APPLY THOSE COMPONENTS AND STUDY HOW THE PLANTS ARE REACTING TO THOSE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND SEE HOW THEY ARE CONTRIBUTING TO PLANTS GROWING BETTER.
SO WE CAN MAKE VERY INFORMED DECISIONS IN ADVISING BREEDERS, FARMERS ON LIKE WHAT IS THE BEST STRATEGY TO GO FORWARD TO MAKE OUR AGRICULTURE AS RESILIENT AS POSSIBLE.
THE RATE OF THE TRANSLATION OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH INTO A PRACTICAL APPLICATION IS RELATIVELY SLOW.
THEY'RE NOT TRANSLATING JUST YET.
HOW I SEE IT REALLY IMPACTING IT IS THROUGH COLLABORATIONS WITH PLANT BREEDING.
I'M REALLY HOPING THAT THAT CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE THAT ARE INTERESTED IN USING THE FACILITY TO KIND OF LIKE FINAL STAGE OF THE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.
SO YOU WILL SEE THE EFFECTS BEYOND THE DURATION OF YOUR
